- Catherine and 3 adult daughters in Australia, Catherine only in New York. Writer (66)
Hello from groovy Brunswick East!!
I am Catherine, 65, single (divorced), former high school and teacher of English and French and of English to adults. I am a writer of fiction with publication in Australian literary magazines. I enjoy reading, art, theater, films, travel, all kinds of music, yoga. I love living in Brunswick East, 2 minutes walk to Lygon Street: every kind of restaurant/take-out from Japanese to Lebanese to Thai to Italian and more, great coffee, supermarkets and all shopping nearby, 20 minutes to city by tram, 10 minutes to Carlton, University suburb and our 'Little Italy'.
I have 3 adult daughters. One, Natasha, has lived in Brooklyn for several years (she has a Green Card.) She is an established artist having mounted installations in Australia, Europe, Asia and New York. She has one permanent installation in New York, details at www.natashajohnsmessenger.com
Natasha has also completed her second Masters of Fine Art in film directing and screenwriting at Columbia University. Genevieve, screenwriter and civil celebrant, and Julia, singer/songwriter/producer, live in Melbourne.
My previous exchange destinations have been London, Paris, Shanghai, and New York and Brisbane and Iluka, Australia.
The first one in New York was non-simultaneous: I moved out of my apartment to offer hospitality to my exchange hosts, who then accepted employment elsewhere in USA so I didn’t get to stay at their home. Another was also a non-simultaneous, more convenient as I was traveling when my hosts’ daughter and friend stayed in my Melbourne apartment, and in exchange my daughter Julia stayed at their home in New York in my place. In 2013 I spent a wonderful month in Manhattan, a simultaneous exchange. I love New York city and can’t wait to visit again in 2017.
March 1 — October 1, 2018
Longer duration possible. I can do only simultaneous exchange.
Love to walk and get to know cities, explore interesting neighborhoods, visit museums, go to theater. Need to be in easy walking distance from shops, transport etc.
We stayed at Catherine's with our two teenage sons, what a perfect base for a city adventure. Catherine's home is ideally located near all the excitement Carlton, Brunswick and Fitzroy have to offer. We were specifically looking for an exchange in these areas and Catherine's home was perfect. Located directly near the tram stop into the city or St Kilda as well. Incredible restaurants, live music venues and amazing shops (including op shops that have weekend and late night shopping!) all around. We were in heaven. Catherine's home has amazing art work and photography, many created by family members so it was lovely to hear the unique stories associated with the works. She has everything you need in her apartment to be comfortable and happy. We love Melbourne and we had such a great stay. Thanks again Catherine, even though it was almost a year ago now we still have such fond memories and for anyone else seeking an amazing Melbourne experience, Catherine's is perfect!
My 3 adult daughters and I had a wonderful exchange with Deby and Alan and family in January 2015. Iluka is a quiet village where you can still get a great coffee or restaurant meal (Laneway Cafe and Bowling Club Chinese restaurant favourites) surrounded by National Parkland and boasting several pristine beaches where you might not see any other people. The house is a unique period house full of amazing retro finds from glassware to furniture, nothing in the house is new. It is large and comfortable and we loved relaxing on the big deck shaded by a huge old mango tree. A great place to chill, catch waves, soak up the sun. Deby and Alan, Max and Zephyr were a pleasure to exchange with, giving us lots of information about beautiful Iluka, and it was lovely to meet Deby's parents as well, they gave us several contacts in their lovely community to help us enjoy our stay. Thoroughly recommend an exchange!
